This listing is for an underkimono - called a "juban" in Japanese - which would be worn under a man's kimono. Juban often feature designs that reflect the interests of their owner but are rarely seen in public since they are layered underneath a kimono. Just in inch or two of the over-collar is visible, though you may catch a glimpse of the sleeve edge at the wrist. Juban make great casual robes.

This juban features a repeating print of landscape scenery and travelers along the Tokaido Road - a famous route between Edo and Kyoto. The figures are a mix of travelers, merchants and samurai, as well as upper-class travelers in their kago (palanquins). Several little boats provide passage across the rivers along the way. Kanji brushwork, Mt Fuji in the distance, and an earthtone color palette - grays and browns.

The over-collar is black with a partial cream lining.

Juban make great robes and cover ups but watch the video below to see how to layer the juban with a kimono.

This kimono does not come with an obi/belt/sash, but we do make simple cotton sashes that can be added as an option when you order. We will choose a color that goes well with it.

If you'd like to display the kimono, we offer hanging rods in five colors (brown, black, natural, white, and red) - see the Add a Display Rod? tab below.
