This listing is for a vintage Japanese nagoya style obi. See below for details on this exceptional group of Japanese textiles.

Nagoya obi are notoriously difficult to display because of their unusual shape - folded over for two-thirds of the length where it would be wound around the waist. But the Fuller Collection owners developed a unique way to display them - cleverly tacking the point of the fold to the narrow section and adding a copper tube to support the hanging cording - to create the long display shown in the photos.

This obi is a breath of Spring! Angled, wavering lines remind us of rolling waves, but actually those lines are tatewaku, referring to the warm steam that rises from a hot spring. Between the lines are swaths of spring green, butter yellow and a pumpkin orange, with lots of silver woven in.  Flowing between the lines are elongated chrysanthemums that seem to be just carried along in the current.

There is a touch of black at the curve of some waves that create a shadow effect.  The backside is white.

Excellent condition, silk, and within the typical nagoya measurements: approximately 11 feet long in total and 14 inches wide. As shown, the display length is approximately 54 inches with about 2 inches of the belt portion extending at the bottom.
