This listing is for a vintage, formal, Japanese kimono called a tomesode (sometimes called kurosode or "Mother of the Bride" kimono), which are typically reserved for very formal occasions, such as weddings or performances. There are always at least three - but usually five - family crests on the upper section (one at the neck, one on the back of each sleeve, and one on each side of the collar) and an elegant design that stretches across the entire hemline, with more of the image in the front, where it would be seen best.

This tomesode features a very colorful village along a stretch of lovely blue water. Some boats, some haystacks, and dozens of purple-roofed structures, including some traditional thatched-roof houses. The design was created with the yuzen technique - evidenced but the thin white lines outlining each element. So much work, so much skill... See the video below for how this is done.

The kimono is signed by the artist - the stamp appears on the inner right side panel. Sorry, we cannot identify the artist from the signature.

See last photo - there is fading at the collar fold as well as on each side of the collar. This would not impact the display if it was hung to feature the backside.

The family crest is of four small diamonds forming one large one.
