A miniature courtly world glows against the deep black silk of this striking vintage haori. Intricately woven scenes depict elegantly robed figures surrounded by folding screens, and courtly objects, rendered in dense metallic and urushi lacquered threads of gold, bronze, silver, muted red, and green.

The imagery strongly evokes the aristocratic Heian-period world associated with The Tale of Genji. The lavishly patterned layered robes and intimate interior settings capture the refinement and romance associated with classical court life, while the restrained placement of the scenes against solid black gives the jacket an especially dramatic, almost theatrical quality.

Black haori like this are sometimes called "visiting haori" since they were worn for semi-formal occasions, like attending a community gathering.

A woman's haori is a traditional Japanese jacket worn over a kimono, designed to provide both warmth and an added layer of formality. Today, these jackets transition effortlessly into modern fashion as a lightweight, open-front layer.
