This listing is for an antique Japanese kimono made for a young girl. To learn more about these type of kimono read below.

A garden of chrysanthemums bursts into bloom across this charming vintage girl's kimono, with a lively collage of flowers and foliage against a deep purple background. Oversized mums in vibrant orange, soft green, ivory, and pale blue mingle with smaller blossoms and intricately detailed leaves, creating a beautifully layered design that celebrates longevity, happiness, and autumn's abundance. The kimono is fully lined, with a colorful interior featuring bold red fabric, and includes attached ties for easy dressing.

This kimono is in lovely condition overall, with a faint blemish on the back that is difficult to distinguish among the busy floral pattern - not unusual for a child's kimono that is roughly 100 years old.  The chirimen silk, floral composition, and red lining are strong indicators that this kimono is from the Taisho Period (1920s).

This kimono has an 8" tuck at the waist and a 2" tuck at each shoulder. These can be taken out to allow for more length and width if desired.

Traditional Japanese children's kimono were worn for special occasions, family celebrations, festivals, and ceremonial events, including Shichi-Go-San (Seven-Five-Three), a celebration honoring children's growth and well-being at ages three, five, and seven. Traditionally, girls celebrate at ages three and seven, while boys celebrate at ages three and five, although customs vary by region and family. Girls' kimono often featured colorful patterns, auspicious motifs, and attached ties to make dressing easier for young children. Many were carefully preserved and passed down through generations as treasured family keepsakes.

Vintage Japanese children's kimono make eye-catching displays in spaces too small to accommodate a full-sized kimono. We offer display rods (click the tab below) if you're going to display this kimono.

If purchasing this to be worn, please check the measurements given carefully.  Children's kimono run small!
