This listing is for a vintage Japanese haori jacket. Learn more about this type of garment below.

Bold and wonderfully graphic, this vintage haori pairs deep crimson red with creamy white in an oversized pine design that feels surprisingly modern. Large pinecones and sweeping clusters of long needles are created primarily with shibori resist dyeing -- with the narrow linear sections appearing consistent with suji shibori (where fabric is gathered or compressed into elongated folds to produce streaked bands), while the pinecones use larger bound and resisted sections to create their irregular segmented shapes. Pine is an auspicious Japanese motif associated with longevity, endurance, and steadfastness.

The inside offers an unexpected burst of color with a bright orange and cream patchwork-style lining accented with floral motifs.

Signs of age present, including a couple of small holes on the front sleeve, see last photo.

A woman's haori is a traditional Japanese jacket worn over a kimono, designed to provide both warmth and an added layer of formality. Today, these jackets transition effortlessly into modern fashion as a lightweight, open-front layer. They can be worn over dresses, denim, or simple basics to add texture, color, and a distinctive, artful touch.

Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath. An optional accessory is the haori himo - little woven ties that are hooked to the little fabric loops that you'll find at the mid-front of the haori - but they are sold separately. We'll select one that goes with this haori if you pick the Add A Himo Pair option above. To choose a pair of our fancier himo, CLICK HERE.

Going to display this haori? We offer wooden display rods in five colors to choose from. Add one from the tab below this description.
