This listing is for a vintage Japanese haori jacket that would have been worn on top of a vintage kimono on a chilly day.  

This is quite a special woman's haori jacket with bold patterns on the outside and inside.

The outside is a rich orange with an overall pattern of abstractly-designed squares scattered across the surface. Some are plain, others have a stained-glass style. The squares have uneven edges, resembling tattered papers or fabric remnants.

The inside is even more captivating, with a deep plum purple base covered with large panels of Egyptian- and Mesopotamian-inspired motifs. The printed designs feature stylized hieroglyphs, animals, mythical beasts, geometric symbols, and figures. These motifs reflect Japan's mid-20th century fascination with world cultures where Egyptian and other themes were adapted into modern textiles. 

Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath. An optional accessory is the haori himo - little woven ties that are hooked to the little fabric loops that you'll find at the mid-front of the haori - but they are sold separately.
