This vintage Japanese haori jacket would have been worn on top of a vintage kimono on a chilly day. The retro feel of the patterning suggests it might be from the 1950s or 1960s.

Diagonal sheets of rain, perhaps. Hand-drawn sumie-style diagonal lines were densely drawn to depict - perhaps - a torrential downpour. You'll find coral, olive, and kelly green accent colors here and there, with an overall layer of silver sparkles - perhaps the sun coming out after the downpour. On the lining is a surprise pattern of olden sailing vessels.

Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath.

All of the stitching is hidden (since it was hand-sewn) so technically these haori jackets are reversible. Sometimes the lining is as pretty as the outer jacket!

We do offer haori himo - the little woven ties that are hooked to the little fabric loops that you'll find on at the mid-front of the haori - but they are sold separately. We'll select one that goes with this haori if you pick the Add A Himo Pair ($5) option above. To choose a pair of our fancier himo, CLICK HERE.
