This listing is for a single vintage Japanese katagami stencil. Read below to learn more about katagami stencils.

A striking study in simplicity and precision, this vintage katagami stencil features a graceful bamboo grove rendered in hundreds of tiny, meticulously cut dashes and dots. Tall, slender stalks intersect with angular bamboo leaves, creating a rhythmic geometric design that feels both traditional and surprisingly modern. In Japanese culture, bamboo symbolizes strength, resilience, and flexibility, making this an especially meaningful botanical motif.

This stencil measures 20.25" x 12.25" and shows significant signs of age and use, including dark pigment residue and brush marks from textile production, surface creases, worn edges, small holes, and a substantial area of paper loss along the upper edge.

These stencils are still usable but would need a gentle touch and to be moistened before use.  Nowadays, more durable plastic versions are used.

These vintage Japanese katagami stencils were used to create intricate patterns on textiles, particularly kimono fabrics. Hand-cut from layers of washi paper treated with persimmon tannin (kakishibu), the paper becomes strong, flexible, and water-resistant, allowing the stencils to withstand repeated use in the dyeing process. Each stencil showcases the artistry and precision of Japanese craftsmanship, with designs ranging from delicate florals and geometric patterns to symbolic and nature-inspired motifs. Once practical tools for textile production, these vintage stencils are now appreciated as collectible works of art, beautiful for framing, display, or creative projects.
