This listing is for a single vintage Japanese katagami stencil. Read below to learn more about katagami stencils.

Bold and striking in its simplicity, this vintage katagami stencil features a large, expressive kanji character for "youth" (waka) but can also be the character for a first name. The character's sweeping, brushstroke-inspired forms are carefully cut from dark persimmon paper, with delicate silk threads stretched across the open spaces using a traditional technique known as ito-ire. These nearly invisible threads reinforce the stencil and support the intricate cutwork without interrupting the design, adding a fascinating layer of craftsmanship to this dramatic piece.

This stencil measures 16" x 12.25" and shows signs of age and use, including surface creases, discoloration, small tears, and worn edges and corners, with the delicate supporting threads still visible throughout the design. These stencils are still usable but would need a gentle touch, nowadays, more durable plastic versions are used.

Japanese katagami stencils are traditional tools used to create intricate patterns on textiles, particularly kimono fabrics. Hand-cut from layers of washi paper treated with persimmon tannin (kakishibu), the paper becomes strong, flexible, and water-resistant, allowing the stencils to withstand repeated use in the dyeing process. Each stencil showcases the artistry and precision of Japanese craftsmanship, with designs ranging from delicate florals and geometric patterns to symbolic and nature-inspired motifs. Once practical tools for textile production, these vintage stencils are now appreciated as collectible works of art, beautiful for framing, display, or creative projects.
