Delicate plum blossom clusters float across this vintage katagami stencil, connected by slender bamboo stalks that create a graceful, airy composition. Each rounded floral cluster features intricate cutwork with a lace-like quality, meant to imitate the shibori (Japanese tie dye) technique. Plum blossoms symbolize perseverance and renewal in Japanese culture, while bamboo represents strength and flexibility.

This stencil measures 16" x 12.5" and shows signs of age and use, including creases and worn edges throughout the delicate cutwork. These stencils are still usable but would need a gentle touch and to be moistened before use.  Nowadays, more durable plastic versions are used.

These vintage Japanese katagami stencils were used to create intricate patterns on textiles, particularly kimono fabrics. Hand-cut from layers of washi paper treated with persimmon tannin (kakishibu), the paper becomes strong, flexible, and water-resistant, allowing the stencils to withstand repeated use in the dyeing process.
