This listing is for a single Japanese katagami stencil purchased recently in Kyoto - never used - but created with the traditional hole-punch technique.  Read below to learn more about katagami stencils.

A charming countryside escape comes to life in this unusual vintage katagami stencil featuring a picturesque windmill landscape. Delicate rows of hand-punched dots outline a traditional windmill, quaint cottages, leafy trees, and gently rolling hills, creating a scene reminiscent of a European pastoral illustration. The remarkably fine perforations give the design a soft, almost embroidered appearance, making this a distinctive departure from traditional Japanese floral and geometric motifs.

Unlike traditional katagami stencils with larger cutout designs, this piece features delicate punched dots that create a detailed, illustration-like image. The technique resembles perforated embroidery transfer patterns, making this an especially interesting example of Japanese craftsmanship with Western-inspired imagery.

Measuring 16" x 11.5", this stencil appears unused, with exceptionally clean perforations and only minor surface discoloration, light creasing, and gentle handling wear.

Japanese katagami stencils are traditional tools used to create intricate patterns on textiles, particularly kimono fabrics. Hand-cut from layers of washi paper treated with persimmon tannin (kakishibu), the paper becomes strong, flexible, and water-resistant, allowing the stencils to withstand repeated use in the dyeing process. Each stencil showcases the artistry and precision of Japanese craftsmanship, with designs ranging from delicate florals and geometric patterns to symbolic and nature-inspired motifs. Once practical tools for textile production, these vintage stencils are now appreciated as collectible works of art, beautiful for framing, display, or creative projects.
