This listing is for a vintage Japanese haori jacket. Learn more about this type of garment below.

Rich and timeworn, this haori carries the warmth of aged textiles and traditional craft. The outer layer features a bold burnt orange silk designed with hundreds of "spiderweb" shibori squares that create a fractured glass pattern.  Scattered about are large, sometimes overlapping squares created with cream and beige shibori. The resist-dye work shows a mix of tighter and softer binding, giving the pattern a slightly irregular, organic feel that speaks to its age. The layered beige squares look similar to Genji-ko incense diagrams, but they don't show any of the distinctive named patterns.

Inside, the lining reveals a striking repeating wheel (kuruma) pattern, a classic motif associated with travel, status, and seasonal processions, offering a hidden moment of visual impact.

This is a very vintage garment, with overall wear, fading, and visible blemishes consistent with its age, but it reads as character rather than flaw. A strong, collectible haori with presence and history.

A woman's haori is a traditional Japanese jacket worn over a kimono, designed to provide both warmth and an added layer of formality. Today, these jackets transition effortlessly into modern fashion as a lightweight, open-front layer. They can be worn over dresses, denim, or simple basics to add texture, color, and a distinctive, artful touch.

Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath. An optional accessory is the haori himo - little woven ties that are hooked to the little fabric loops that you'll find at the mid-front of the haori - but they are sold separately. We'll select one that goes with this haori if you pick the Add A Himo Pair option above. To choose a pair of our fancier himo, CLICK HERE.
