This listing is for a vintage Japanese haori jacket. Learn more about this type of garment below.

A lush garden comes to life against the deep black background, with woven bamboo, plum blossom, peony, tachibana, chrysanthemum, and iris in rich red, gold, silver, and touches of blue. Shimmering urushi lacquered threads give the florals a luminous quality, while the mix of seasonal blooms evokes beauty, renewal, and longevity, finished with a single stitched paulownia crest.

Black haori like this are sometimes called "visiting haori" since they were worn for semi-formal occasions, like attending a community gathering.

A woman's haori is a traditional Japanese jacket worn over a kimono, designed to provide both warmth and an added layer of formality. Today, these jackets transition effortlessly into modern fashion as a lightweight, open-front layer. They can be worn over dresses, denim, or simple basics to add texture, color, and a distinctive, artful touch.

Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath. An optional accessory is the haori himo - little woven ties that are hooked to the little fabric loops that you'll find at the mid-front of the haori - but they are sold separately. We'll select one that goes with this haori if you pick the Add A Himo Pair option above. To choose a pair of our fancier himo, CLICK HERE.
