This listing is for a single vintage Japanese katagami stencil. Read below to learn more about katagami stencils.

A whimsical garden of delicate florals brings this vintage katagami stencil to life, with clusters of patterned blossoms rising on long, slender stems among graceful, sweeping grasses and tiny leafy sprigs. Intricate cutwork creates wonderful texture within the rounded flower heads, while the flowing lines give the repeating design a light, airy sense of movement. Look closely to discover the fine silk threads woven across the openings using the traditional ito-ire technique, an ingenious method of reinforcing delicate cutouts while preserving the intricate design.

Measuring 17" x 12.25", this vintage stencil shows signs of age and use, including surface discoloration, scattered dark stains, creasing, and minor wear along the edges.

These stencils are still usable but would need a gentle touch and to be moistened before use.  Nowadays, more durable plastic versions are used.

These vintage Japanese katagami stencils were used to create intricate patterns on textiles, particularly kimono fabrics. Hand-cut from layers of washi paper treated with persimmon tannin (kakishibu), the paper becomes strong, flexible, and water-resistant, allowing the stencils to withstand repeated use in the dyeing process. Each stencil showcases the artistry and precision of Japanese craftsmanship, with designs ranging from delicate florals and geometric patterns to symbolic and nature-inspired motifs. Once practical tools for textile production, these vintage stencils are now appreciated as collectible works of art, beautiful for framing, display, or creative projects.
