These combs came to us as part of a textile collection from a Japanese interior designer who passed away.  We like to offer non-textile vintage Japanese items when we come across them and hope that other Japanophiles enjoy seeing them.

This set might have been a standard dressing-table group for a kimono-clad women in the 1950s. Three different comb types are included. CLICK HERE to go to an article that goes into detail about what each type was used for.

The small curved one (tokigushi) is for detangling, the long-tailed square one (bindashi) is for puffing out the sides of the traditional hair styles, and the long-tail rounded one (hamaguri) is for the "finishing touches".

There is a hairline crack in the bindashi (see photo) and a small maker's mark on the hamaguri, but they are otherwises unpatterned.

They come in a box though we don't think it is the original box.

tokigushi: 5" long
bindashi: 9" long
hamaguri: 7" long
