This listing is for a single vintage Japanese katagami stencil. Read below to learn more about katagami stencils.

A playful study in geometry, this vintage katagami stencil features scattered squares and irregular abstract shapes surrounded by hundreds of tiny, precisely cut ovals that create flowing, wave-like patterns. Its abstract design suggests it could have been one of several stencils used in succession, each contributing a different color or element to a larger, more elaborate textile pattern. A small perforated marking near the corner may have helped identify the stencil within a set, while dark brush marks and pigment residue offer evidence of its history as a working textile tool.

This stencil measures 16.5" x 12.75" and shows signs of age and use, including dark pigment residue and brush marks from its likely use in textile production, along with discoloration, creases, worn edges, small tears, and areas of paper loss. These stencils are still usable but would need a gentle touch and to be moistened before use.  Nowadays, more durable plastic versions are used.

These vintage Japanese katagami stencils were used to create intricate patterns on textiles, particularly kimono fabrics. Hand-cut from layers of washi paper treated with persimmon tannin (kakishibu), the paper becomes strong, flexible, and water-resistant, allowing the stencils to withstand repeated use in the dyeing process. Each stencil showcases the artistry and precision of Japanese craftsmanship, with designs ranging from delicate florals and geometric patterns to symbolic and nature-inspired motifs. Once practical tools for textile production, these vintage stencils are now appreciated as collectible works of art, beautiful for framing, display, or creative projects.
