This listing is for a vintage Japanese kokeshi doll.  These are traditional wooden dolls dating back to the late Edo period (early 1800s). Originally made as toys and souvenirs for visitors, they symbolize protection and good luck but have also become valued souvenirs representing visited temples and villages.

Sail into good fortune with this delightful vintage kokeshi treasure boat. A folk-art scene featuring a full crew of hand painted wooden figures representing the Seven Lucky Gods or Shichifukujin, who are believed to bring happiness, longevity, and prosperity. Each tiny god is painted with unique expressions and colorful kimono motifs.

The carved vessel carries a sail marked with a character that means gold or wealth, a classic New Year symbol for inviting prosperity. Soft purple and cream tassels, a vibrant red tree, and a playful yellow cord complete the charm.

A handwritten inscription on the back suggest it was created or gifted on a January 11th date, adding a personal touch and sense of history.

4" x 4" x 1.5" - Small Size

Kokeshi are often a simple cylindrical body, a round head that sometimes bobbles and a painted face or carved patterns with a serene expression. There are two styles - traditional (dento) and creative (shingata) which emerged after WWII to show more freedom in design, color, and themes.
