This kimono tapestry was created from the hem design of a formal furisode kimono. (There were blemishes on the top portion but we love the display of the entire hemline design!

We love the purple and orange combination - it's an auspicious one in Japanese design.

A huge sweep of florals seem caught up in a cosmic purple sky - see the gold flecks that seem like stars! Green and gold accents complete the palette, and the white silk background allows the entire design to pop.  Gold couching around some of the petals add more interest and value.

See the bamboo and lozenge jacquard elements woven into the background silk.

The backside shows orange shading along the edges. When this was a kimono, the orange would have flashed briefly at the hem as the wearer walked, catching the eye, admiration and curiousity of nearby observers.

The design was created with the yuzen technique - see the video below for more information on this traditional textile technique.

The sleeve at the top can accomodate a half-inch dowel or rod.  (Unfortunately, our hanging rods are one inch diameter so do not fit in that sleeve.)

We create these tapestries by salvaging the designed hem area of a kimono when other sections of the garment are beyond repair or rescue. We keep the processing simple, retaining the original lining and stitching (usually hand done) and simply finishing off the upper edge to allow a display rod (up to 1.5" diameter) to be inserted across the top. Click the option above to purchase one of our display rods (as shown in the photo).
