This listing is for a single vintage Japanese katagami stencil. Read below to learn more about katagami stencils.

Bold and beautifully graphic, this vintage katagami stencil features three stylized arrow feathers arranged diagonally in a striking, minimalist composition. Precisely cut parallel lines and angular shapes create a wonderful balance of movement and symmetry, while the arrow motif evokes traditional Japanese symbolism of protection, direction, and determination.

This stencil measures 17.25 x 10.25 inches and shows significant signs of age and use, including surface discoloration, colorful dye stains, creases, worn edges, and small tears, with delicate areas supported by a fine thread mesh.

The Japanese lettering printed along the top of the stencil appears to identify it as Neoshin dyeing stencil paper, possibly referring to a commercial brand or product line. Additional smaller markings may indicate the manufacturer or distributor, offering an interesting glimpse into the stencil's production history.

These stencils are still usable but would need a gentle touch and to be moistened before use.  Nowadays, more durable plastic versions are used.

These vintage Japanese katagami stencils were used to create intricate patterns on textiles, particularly kimono fabrics. Hand-cut from layers of washi paper treated with persimmon tannin (kakishibu), the paper becomes strong, flexible, and water-resistant, allowing the stencils to withstand repeated use in the dyeing process. Each stencil showcases the artistry and precision of Japanese craftsmanship, with designs ranging from delicate florals and geometric patterns to symbolic and nature-inspired motifs. Once practical tools for textile production, these vintage stencils are now appreciated as collectible works of art, beautiful for framing, display, or creative projects.
