This listing is for a single vintage Japanese katagami stencil. Read below to learn more about katagami stencils.

Bold botanical elegance takes center stage in this vintage katagami stencil, featuring two striking paulownia crests surrounded by dramatic, curling vines. The intricately hand-cut paulownia leaves and delicate floral sprays contrast beautifully with the flowing, arabesque-style scrollwork, creating a design full of movement and sophistication. Paulownia, or kiri, is a traditional Japanese symbol of nobility, prosperity, and good fortune, historically associated with the imperial court.

Measuring 16" x 12.25", this stencil shows signs of age and use, including surface discoloration, creasing, small tears, and wear along the edges and corners.

These stencils are still usable but would need a gentle touch and to be moistened before use.  Nowadays, more durable plastic versions are used.

These vintage Japanese katagami stencils were used to create intricate patterns on textiles, particularly kimono fabrics. Hand-cut from layers of washi paper treated with persimmon tannin (kakishibu), the paper becomes strong, flexible, and water-resistant, allowing the stencils to withstand repeated use in the dyeing process. Each stencil showcases the artistry and precision of Japanese craftsmanship, with designs ranging from delicate florals and geometric patterns to symbolic and nature-inspired motifs. Once practical tools for textile production, these vintage stencils are now appreciated as collectible works of art, beautiful for framing, display, or creative projects.
