This listing is for an antique hikeshi zukin or fireman's hood. These unique and rare hoods are crafted from thick, quilted indigo-dyed cotton for heat resistance and protection. Originally worn by hikeshi (traditional Japanese firefighters), these hoods were soaked in water before entering burning buildings to protect the head, shoulders, and neck from sparks and heat.

This hood features a deep blue body accented with tan edging - simple and functional. The front flap bears a bold kanji character enclosed in a red circle, likely a brigade or family crest identifying the wearer's firefighting group. The kanji translates to "wild boar" - perhaps a brigade that prided itself on bravery, protection, and determination.

Signs of age and patina tell a story of practical use, making this piece not only a functional artifact of Japan's firefighting history, but also a collectible example of disaster prevention craftmanship.
