This listing is for a single vintage Japanese katagami stencil. Read below to learn more about katagami stencils.

A charming mix of geometry and nature, this vintage katagami stencil features scattered hexagonal motifs intertwined with delicate, winding vines and stylized leaves. Each hexagon is outlined with incredibly fine grid-like cutwork, while some of the smaller motifs feature patterns that imitate shibori (Japanese tie dye), creating a playful contrast of textures. The hexagonal shapes evoke the traditional Japanese tortoiseshell (kikko) motif, associated with longevity and good fortune.

Faded markings, scattered characters, and remnants of earlier pattern work remain visible on the persimmon paper, adding an intriguing layer of history and character to this vintage piece.

This stencil measures 15.75" x 12.25" and shows signs of age and use, including discoloration, surface markings, creases, worn edges, and minor imperfections in the delicate cutwork. These stencils are still usable but would need a gentle touch and to be moistened before use.  Nowadays, more durable plastic versions are used.

These vintage Japanese katagami stencils were used to create intricate patterns on textiles, particularly kimono fabrics. Hand-cut from layers of washi paper treated with persimmon tannin (kakishibu), the paper becomes strong, flexible, and water-resistant, allowing the stencils to withstand repeated use in the dyeing process. Each stencil showcases the artistry and precision of Japanese craftsmanship, with designs ranging from delicate florals and geometric patterns to symbolic and nature-inspired motifs. Once practical tools for textile production, these vintage stencils are now appreciated as collectible works of art, beautiful for framing, display, or creative projects.
