A dramatic explosion of blossoms and billowing shapes gives this vintage katagami stencil a bold, almost whimsical appearance. Densely clustered chrysanthemum-like flowers feature finely carved, radiating petals, while flowing foliage and large cloud-like openings create a striking interplay of positive and negative space. Chrysanthemums traditionally symbolize longevity, rejuvenation, and good fortune in Japanese art.

Measuring 17.75" x 12.5", this stencil shows signs of age and use, including surface discoloration, fine creases, small tears, and noticeable chipping and losses along the edges, particularly the lower corners.

These stencils are still usable but would need a gentle touch and to be moistened before use.  Nowadays, more durable plastic versions are used.

These vintage Japanese katagami stencils were used to create intricate patterns on textiles, particularly kimono fabrics.
