This listing is for a pair of traditional hikeshi momohiki - work trousers worn by Japanese firefighters. These unique pair of pants are crafted from thick indigo-dyed cotton for heat resistance and protection. Momohiki trousers are small and have dramatically tapered legs to reduce snagging when working in hazardous conditions.

This pair features sashiko-stitching, which provides extra durability and protection against heat and debris. The lower legs are more densely sashiko stitched. The indigo dye offers a natural fire-retardant and also has insect-repelling properties.

These momohiki would have been worn with a matching jacket or coat as part of a fireman's full protective attire. Although they are vintage, they are like-new. They are quite small - possibly a size zero - so perhaps more appropriate as an addition to a collection rather than to wear.
