This listing is for a single vintage Japanese katagami stencil. Read below to learn more about katagami stencils.

A striking display of evergreen elegance, this vintage katagami stencil features sweeping pine branches arranged in a graceful vertical composition. Long, slender needles radiate from twisting branches, accented by small pinecones and beautifully defined through precise, elongated cutouts. The open, asymmetrical arrangement gives the design a distinctly Japanese aesthetic, celebrating the pine as a symbol of longevity, resilience, and good fortune.

This stencil measures 17 x 10.25 inches and shows signs of age and use, including surface discoloration, creases, small tears, and wear along the edges, with some delicate areas reinforced by fine mesh.

The Japanese lettering printed along the top of the stencil appears to identify it as Neoshin dyeing stencil paper, possibly referring to a commercial brand or product line. Additional smaller markings may indicate the manufacturer or distributor, offering an interesting glimpse into the stencil's production history.

These stencils are still usable but would need a gentle touch and to be moistened before use.  Nowadays, more durable plastic versions are used.

These vintage Japanese katagami stencils were used to create intricate patterns on textiles, particularly kimono fabrics. Hand-cut from layers of washi paper treated with persimmon tannin (kakishibu), the paper becomes strong, flexible, and water-resistant, allowing the stencils to withstand repeated use in the dyeing process. Each stencil showcases the artistry and precision of Japanese craftsmanship, with designs ranging from delicate florals and geometric patterns to symbolic and nature-inspired motifs. Once practical tools for textile production, these vintage stencils are now appreciated as collectible works of art, beautiful for framing, display, or creative projects.
