This listing is for a vintage Japanese haori jacket that would have been worn on top of a vintage kimono on a chilly day.  Black haori like this are sometimes called "visiting haori" since they were worn for semi-formal occasions, like attending a community gathering.

We've never seen a lacquered box in this shape, even if it were to hold a fan (those are usually still rectangular.) So this motif is a bit of a mystery, which adds more interest and intrigue for the discerning collector.

Hand-painted dyes and shimmering gold leaf bring the florals to life, from the soft peonies and mums to the delicate leaves and curling vines that frame them. The focus is the traditional decorative box or ribbon tied parcel, often used in art to symbolize offerings, blessings, or auspicious occasions. This motif appears on the back and the front.

Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath. An optional accessory is the haori himo - little woven ties that are hooked to the little fabric loops that you'll find on at the mid-front of the haori - but they are sold separately.
