This listing is for a vintage cotton Japanese noren door curtain.

We enjoyed doing the research on the three kanji symbols! We learned that these three characters are Snow - Moon - Flower and refer generally to the seasons, considered a traditional artistic expression. It comes from a 17th Century Chinese poet and was popular in the Edo Period. Note that the panels would be read right-to-left, suggesting this noren was made mid-20th century or was meant to recall earlier times.

The base color is a faded brown, and little yellow ties are sewn where the panels meet, each folded in the same way that wishes are folded when making an offering at a temple or shrine.

The tab loops at the top would accommodate up to 3/4" rod or pole.
