This listing is for a set of silk yardage pieces originally meant to be made into a traditional formal kimono for a young boy - called a miyamairi.  (Note: not all of the pieces to sew the full garment are included).  Combining these silks in a creative way could create a dramatic wearable (or displayable) art piece!

The dye setting process was not completed, leaving the original fabric stiff and the color work unstable.  So, we washed the fabric which removed excess dye, created a soft gray background, and resulted in muted colors and a softer silk that is easy to work with.

The main design features a powerful green hawk soaring above stylized waves, windswept pine branches, flowering plum blossoms, and a richly decorated samurai battle fan (gunbai uchiwa), which are symbols of courage, steadfastness, victory, and enduring good fortune. Soft celadon tones are accented with deep teal, sapphire blue, sage green, and ivory.

There are five pieces in this set each with a 14" width.  Panel lengths vary from 47" to 17" with one panel created by two panels stitched together, for a total of over 5 yards. Several panels have markings for the tailor that would need to be cut around or incorporated into a design. See photos for details.

Signs of age may be present, including light wear, small marks, or subtle variations consistent with vintage textiles.
