This is a listing for a Japanese shishi (lion) dance head puppet. Learn more about this item below.

This puppet features a gold painted lion head with bold red and black accents, wide expressive eyes, and a hinged mouth mechanism operated by an internal cord. A white mane and flowing festival cloth remain attached, along with small bells that would have jingled as the lion moved. The interior wooden frame and hand-painted details show traditional construction methods, while light wear and age to the paint and fabric reflect its use and history.

These are traditionally used in festival performances known as shishimai. These lion figures appear in parades, shrine ceremonies, and seasonal celebrations, where dancers animate the head while draped in cloth to create the illusion of a living creature. The lion is believed to bring good fortune and protection, often playfully "biting" spectators during festivals to ward off back luck. Smaller versions like this one were sometimes used for children's performances, community events, or decorative displays inspired by traditional festival culture.
