Discover a fascinating piece of writing history with this antique Japanese yatate, a portable ink caddy used by travelers and scholars during Japan’s historic samurai period.  We have no provenance on this piece but contend it is from the late Meiji or Early Edo Period (1800–1880) because of its “ladle style”, brass construction, decorative crest, hinged lid, and patina from decades of use or storage.

Crafted from brass and beautifully aged with a rich natural patina, this elegant tool once allowed its owner to write anywhere on the road. The inkpot features a seashell design, and two delicate leaves are carved into the bottom section.

The compact design combines two essential elements of traditional Japanese writing: a small ink reservoir with a hinged lid for powdered ink and a long hollow tube designed to hold a writing brush. Tucked into the obi or a kimono sleeve, yatate functioned as the everyday “portable desk” of Old Japan.

The sculptural form and subtle decorative details give this example historical character and a striking display appeal. Pieces like this capture the practical artistry of Japanese daily life, where even utilitarian tools were made with elegance and care. Whether displayed in a study, writing desk collection, or alongside Asian antiques, it tells a compelling story of travel, literacy, and craftsmanship.

A wonderful collectible for lovers of Japanese antiques, calligraphy tools, or unique historical writing instruments.
