This charming antique Japanese doll is a traditional Ichimatsu ningyō, beautifully dressed in an authentic silk kimono with vivid floral patterns and a richly brocaded obi.

She has a serene expression on her gofun (powdered shell) face, with glass inset eyes, delicately painted puckered lips, and straight-cut hairstyle of human hair.  The kimono displays vibrant seasonal motifs in deep indigo, red, and soft pastels, layered in the classic style with bright red lining.  Likely from the late Taisho (1920s) or early Showa Period.

There are signs of age with thinning hair and a broken finger on the right hand, see last photo.

Ichimatsu dolls were historically made to represent children and were often treasured as companions or displayed during festivals such as Hinamatsuri (Japan’s Girls’ Day). The doll’s expressive simplicity and carefully constructed costume reflect the artistry of traditional Japanese textile culture.

A wonderful collectible for admirers of Japanese antiques, doll collectors, or anyone who appreciates the beauty of vintage kimono textiles. She also makes a striking display piece that brings a touch of old Japan into any interior.
