This is a listing for a Japanese shishi (lion) dance head puppet. Learn more about this item below.

This puppet features a gold painted lion head with bright red detailing and expressive hand-painted features, including wide eyes, bold black linework, and stylized swirly eyebrows. A vivid pink mane has been added across the top, along with small metal bells that would jingle during movement.

The lion retains its hinged jaw mechanism with interior wooden frame and pull cord, allowing the mouth to open and close during performance. The fabric is bright red with white spiral motifs.

Signs of use and age are visible in the paint, fabric and interior wood structure, reflecting its history as a working festival piece.

These are traditionally used in festival performances known as shishimai. These lion figures appear in parades, shrine ceremonies, and seasonal celebrations, where dancers animate the head while draped in cloth to create the illusion of a living creature. The lion is believed to bring good fortune and protection, often playfully "biting" spectators during festivals to ward off back luck. Smaller versions like this one were sometimes used for children's performances, community events, or decorative displays inspired by traditional festival culture.
