This listing is for five small pieces of reclaimed vintage Japanese fabric salvaged from a vintage Japanese kimono.

This fabric bundle includes five roughly square pieces taken from five different kimono.  Each piece was dyed with iron-rich mud - a process called dorozome - and woven with the ikat technique.

Dorozome refers to the iron-rich mud used to dye the threads brown and is said to strengthen the fibers so the kimono will last a long time.  Ikat (aka kasuri) is a weaving style where the threads are dyed before being woven so that the pattern emerges on the loom. See video below for more on these techniques.

Lengths and widths vary from 9-12".

Great for piecework, especially when combined with other vintage kimono remnants.

When we find vintage (circa 1950s but could be older or newer by two decades) Japanese kimono or haori in less-than-sellable condition, we salvage what we can and offer it to artisans, quilters, crafters, and designers for project work. So, the fabric has been previously sewn and though we carefully deconstruct the kimono, previous seam lines, as well as minor blemishes, may need to be worked around or trimmed away.

The inspiring designs, hand work, and the ageless beauty of vintage Japanese textiles make all the extra work so worthwhile. See video below for inspiration on upcycling vintage Japanese textiles.
