Discover a fascinating piece of writing history with this antique Japanese Yatate, a portable ink caddy traditionally carried by travelers, scholars, merchants, and samurai during Japan’s pre-modern era. Yatate allowed writers to carry ink and a brush wherever they traveled, making it possible to compose letters, poetry, or records on the road.

This example is crafted from solid brass and features the classic ladle-style form, with a long tubular holder for a writing brush and a hinged ink reservoir. The hinged lid opens to reveal the ink chamber, which historically held powdered ink and a small wad of fiber used to absorb liquid ink. Remnants of this traditional fiber packing remain inside the reservoir, a wonderful authentic detail that hints at its original use.

Although we have no provenance for this piece, several of its stylistic features are associated with Kyoto metalwork: the decorative sculptural lid with the gourd on top, the shield-form ink reservoir, and the delicate scroll work connecting the pot to the tube. In addition, the heavy brass, fine hand-tooled reservoir, and surface pitting from the casting process suggest this may be from the late Edo Period.

The lid is decorated with a stylized crest-like motif and the underside shows a lightly engraved character, adding visual interest and suggesting workshop or owner markings. The piece has developed a rich, warm patina from age and handling, giving it the understated beauty collectors appreciate in traditional Japanese metalwork.

Yatate were typically tucked into an obi sash or kimono sleeve, serving as the everyday “portable desk” of Old Japan. The elegant proportions and sculptural silhouette make this piece not only a historical writing tool but also a striking decorative object for a desk, study, or collection of Asian antiques.

A wonderful collectible for admirers of Japanese antiques, calligraphy tools, or unusual historical writing instruments.
