This listing is for a decorative image taken from a vintage Japanese katagami stencil, suitable for framing.  It is not part of the original stencil - it is a copied image, machine-cut, on thick art paper. See below for how these traditional stencils were designed, cut by hand and used to pattern Japanese textiles.

This fun little frame-able features a cartoonish motif of crabs that likely would have been made for a child's summer yukata or bedtime kimono.

Photos show examples of how a carefully chosen piece of kimono fabric placed behind the crest adds depth, texture, and cultural resonance, allowing the colors and patterns of the textile to animate the design and transform into a layered work of art.
