This listing is for a vintage tenugui (hand towel) dyed with indigo, though we suspect it was chemical indigo.

This tenugui is from Tokushima in Shikoku - it says so in the little red box at the top.  Other wording confirms this is an "omiage" (souvenir) from a night of dancing.  We can't translate the beautiful red script, but the stylized font is quite striking and graphic.

Blocks of dark blue indigo alternate with the white, arranged in a rhythmic, scroll-like layout that seems to tell a story with stylized waves, swirling water motifs, and kimono-clad women.

It's a compelling piece for wall display, collectors, or those drawn to Japanese textiles with story and symbolism.
