This listing is for a full bolt of traditional Japanese fabric intended to be made into a fukuro or semi-formal obi sash.  See below for more detail on its construction, patterning and traditional use.

Simple and quite elegant - this shimmering beauty would elevate any formal kimono to the next level.  The metallic sheen could come from silver- or platinum-covered silk threads; and while it seems absurd to believe it is platinum, silver would likely have tarnished over the decades, and this has not. See the video below for more on weaving with metal-covered paper threads.

The weave is simple, thin vertical bands. Fringed ends confirm this was stored as it came off the loom - possibly commissioned but not purchased.

This full bolt is 5 yards long.

The fabric is a thick weave that is both pliable and sturdy – perfect for being tied into an elaborate bow at the back of a kimono, and just a perfect as table or wall décor. Plenty of fabric to convert into home décor (pillows!) or an elegant jacket or coat…?
