This hand-carved Japanese woodblock printing plate was used to reproduce pages of scholarly text, possibly before more modern printing methods became common. The surface is densely carved with vertical columns of kanji, each character cut in reverse so it would print correctly on paper when inked and pressed.

A smattering of visible characters includes sun/day, hundred, country, learning, righteousness, and horse, suggesting the block likely comes from a dictionary, educational reference text, sutra or classic learning manual similar to a setsuyoshi or scholarly text.

The block shows heavy ink residue and wear from repeated use, reflecting its working life in a print shop. The back retains hand-written ink marks from the printer or workshop.

The last photo is a pencil rubbing to show the carved characters.
