This listing is a vintage Japanese folding fan (sensu in Japanese). See videos below on how the paper version of these fans are made - it's quite an elaborate and precise process. Dance fans are larger, wider, and sturdier than ones made for everyday use.

This elegant Japanese dance fan features a minimalist design in warm cream paper edged in a dark red. The simplicity of its form evokes the refined restraint of Kyoto stage traditions, where gesture and color convey emotion more powerfully than embellishment.

Handcrafted by Miyawaki Baisen-an, one of Kyoto's oldest and most prestigious fan makers, this piece embodies centuries of Kyoto sensibility. Its bamboo ribs are finely carved and balanced for performance use. The blank canvas also lends itself for an artist looking for something unique and different to paint.

Complete in its original box stamped with the maker's seal.

These vintage Japanese fans are wonderful as wall accents or used as props in dance, photography, or ceremony. Beautiful for home or office display or as a thoughtful gift.
