This beautifully constructed wig displays the dramatic sculptural styling associated with geisha and stage hair arrangements. It was likely part of an actor’s costume for a traditional dance or theatrical performance. The hair is arranged in a complex coiffure with sweeping side sections and a structured topknot, carefully shaped over a rigid internal frame.

The wig is made with real human hair, individually dressed and lacquered into form using traditional techniques. The underside reveals the metal and fabric framework used to secure the wig during performance. (This internal frame distinguishes this authentic performance wig from other made for souvenir and export.)  These wigs were commonly worn in classical theater or traditional dance connected to the performing arts such as kabuki and as well as in professional geisha styling.

Included is its original wooden storage box, lined in gold paper with a label written in Japanese calligraphy. While some of the writing is unclear, we can discern that this was made by a professional wig maker in Kyoto. Altogether this is a beautiful display piece for collectors of Japanese theater, ethnic costume, or cultural artifacts. Likely from the mid-20th Century.

Good vintage condition with expected age wear. Some loose hairs and minor wear to the interior of the storage box (see photos). The hairstyle remains intact and displays very well.

These wigs are striking sculptural objects and are often displayed in collections of Japanese performing arts, costume history, or Geisha culture.
