This listing is for a full bolt of traditional Japanese fabric intended to be made into a summer season nagoya obi sash. See below for more about nagoya obi.

Soft powder blue meets neon pink in this striking vintage obi fabric, giving its traditional floral design an unexpectedly fresh, graphic look. Bright pink stylized leaves and blossoms are woven against the finely textured neutral background. Bands woven behind the blossoms in turquoise, pale pink, and silvery-white horizontal bands provide a grounding to the floating florals. Some areas incorporate raised and loosely worked threads for added dimension, including a wonderfully tactile flower center.

The label says "Miyuki Tsumugi - High Quality", which suggests that the fiber is silk.  This could be referring to the woven/embroidered florals, but the background fabric has the stiffness we associate with linen or hemp.

The reverse reveals the exposed floats and threads from the woven design rather than a finished reversible surface.

Signs of age are present, including some fading and color variation.

This bolt is laid out in the traditional nagoya obi format: 67" of plain fabric that would be the backside of the obi, followed by an 11" decorative section (bow), 28" plain fabric, another 6" decorative section (belt), and finishing with another 70" of plain fabric.

The fabric is a firm weave that is both pliable and sturdy – perfect for being tied into an elaborate bow at the back of a kimono, and just a perfect if converted to table or wall décor. Plenty of fabric to convert into home décor (pillows!) or an elegant jacket or coat…?

A nagoya obi is a semi formal obi with a partially sewn structure, featuring a wide decorative element at the bow end and a smaller one on the narrower belt section. This bolt has not yet been sewn into the nagoya style but the patterning is set to do so.
