This listing is for a vintage Japanese kimono.

This kimono is a crisp, smooth silk in a royal purple color that is really striking. The floral pattern was created with the ikat technique, where the threads are dyed before weaving so that the pattern emerges on the loom and results in a fuzzy edge to the elements.  Look closely to see that the fuzziness appears in both horizontal and vertical directions, indicating that this was a double ikat weave, where both the warp and weft threads were pre-dyed.

This particular style of ikat patterning is also called meisen, which became popular in the 1920s and decades following. The two blossoms seem to float and tumble along, one white with black and red accents and the other an oulined echo behind it.

Basting stitches around the collar and sleeves suggest that this kimono was never worn (since this is how it comes from the tailor) or was well-cared for (if the stitching was replaced before storage). These can be removed before wearing.

Note in last photo that there is a bit of fading on the right shoulder - not very noticeable but noted.

We do offer hanging rods for displaying kimono - add one from the tab below if desired. If you'd like to wear this kimono with a traditional obi, browse our Obi For Sale page; or for a more casual look, add a Simple Sash at check out.

See video below for how to put on a kimono and how the ikat technique is done.
