This listing is for a dochugi-style vintage kimono jacket, which crosses over in the kimono style (unlike the haori style which hangs open in the front). But instead of needing an obi, it closes with inner and outer ties, which can be tied loosely to allow for a more generous fit. Where haori are best for up to a size 12, dochugi can fit up to a size 16+.

This dazzling number features large, bold bamboo leaves and florals that create a stylized gentian pattern.  Gentian florals symbolize justice and victory.  Curled vines, called karakusa, float between the florals.  The design was woven with the single ikat technique.

The palette of black, gray, and turquoise/teal blue give a distinctive mid-century modern look. A light blue "frog" cording closes the jacket on the right hip.

There is one minor blemish on the back right sleeve, but it blends into the color palette and is only noticeable upon a close inspection.

The traditional dyeing and weaving technique used to create this patterning is called ikat, and it involves dyeing the threads in a pattern before they are woven so that the images emerge on the loom. It's a fascinating and time-consuming process that takes great skill from many artisans. Watch the video below to be amazed.

This style of weaving and patterning became popular in Japan in the Taisho Period of the early 1900s, after the sumptuary laws of the feudal period ended and "common folk" were once again able to wear colorful clothing. Even though the ikat process is time consuming and requires many steps and skill, these kimono were an affordable option for Japanese women who were looking to be fashionable. Art nouveau and art deco designs were popular, along with more traditional florals and geometrics that became exaggerated or expanded.

Please note that the measurement given for the waist/hips is the full, end-to-end measurement around the middle. The ties can usually add 3-4 more inches of coverage depending on how tightly or loosely they are tied.
