This is the top layer jacket of a formal kimono set for a young boy. See details about this style of kimono below.

The featured element of this jacket is a large, fierce-looking hawk that seems to be guarding all he surveys, which includes a series of auspicious elements encircled like family crests on the back and front of the jacket.  Cloves, a hat of invisibility, a magic raincoat, arrow fletching and a couple elements we can't identify. The head of the hawk is embellished with gold couching along the edges.

As is typical of miyamairi, the central section has a light-colored background and the top and hem areas are dyed blue, black or brown.  This blue is a true blue - vibrant! There are three family crests across the back (neck and each sleeve), confirming that this would be worn to an event where the young boy was representing his family.

This jacket does have some discoloring along the front collar, but it does not impact the gorgeous display of the back. See last photo.

The formal set this jacket came from is called Miyamairi, which would be draped over an infant boy for his first visit to the shrine with his parents and grandparents to thank the gods for safe delivery of the child and pray for blessings. Miyamairi are also worn for the Shichi-Go-San festival, when the boy is five years old and goes again to the shrine to pray for his and his family's good fortune. (See video below on the Shichi-Go-San Festival Day for one young family in Japan.).

This style of kimono makes a beautiful display and though they are wearable, they are not play clothes and are not likely to survive the play life of an active child! See below for more about how these are worn.
