Description

This listing is for a full bolt of traditional Japanese fabric intended to be made into a fukuro or semi-formal obi sash. See below for more detail on its construction, patterning and traditional use.

This obi is jet black silk with a floral pattern that covers about 4 yards. At one end there is a solid, no patterned section of 44 inches. Original tags intact.

We know this was meant to become a summer obi because of the weave: a semi-sheer, open weave called ro that allows air to pass between the layers, creating a visually cooling effect. (These were often lined in white which allowed the black-on-black pattern to show beautifully.)

Solid black obi were often worn to funerals or other solemn events. This bolt could certainly be sewn into an obi, but we hope it will find new life and purpose in the hands of an appreciative artisan or crafter.
