Light
colored kimono like this are not so common, but this one
is in great shape and probably not very old - maybe from the
1990's, though the colors are very vintage. Avocado,
peach but no harvest gold, all hand
painted on a semi-sheer
fabric that seems too stiff to be silk but might soften up
with a hand-washing. Just a light kiss of sunshine yellow at
the edges of the panels, most obvious at the collar. |

Darkly elegant robe with a
sweeping, flowing water pattern in turquoise (not a common
color in kimono!) against a black background. Dotted along the
stream is a scattering of large five-pointed florals
in white with blue petals and red centers. Even more amazing
is that this is all a
double ikat pattern, where the threads are dyed before weaving
and the pattern is revealed only on the loom. Silver highlights
and a red lining that peeks
out at the inner sleeve opening. |

Hanabi is the Japanese word for fireworks,
and that's what we see bursting
against the black background in this festive, whimsical summer
kimono. The fabric is almost
sheer (meant to be worn over a silk undergarment) but the
silver threads in
the weave, the ikat and stenciled designs, and the
overlapping colors give it a weight of design but a lightness
for wearing on a warm summer night. |
