"Pink Bamboo" Woman's Haori - $99

This design says "electric 1970's" to us, with the hot pink bamboo leaves scattered against a more traditional use of shibori and color - a high contrast between the white kanoko dots creating an overall pattern of floral and stems against a deep, deep green. The pink pointed bamboo leaves baffle us, but we do like the abstract nature of the design. There's pink on the lining, too - another fun surprise!

"Fiery Sunset" Woman's Haori - $139

If you like bright colors, this jacket is for you! It's not quite a neon coral, but it's a "look at me" jacket that outshines the most romantic sunset. Diagonal wavy bands of shibori reach across the sleeves and bodice; each tiny dot has a dark center that is no doubt the result of many dippings in the same dye as the coral. One fun detail is a set of three dots that must have unravelled during the dipping!

"Sherbert Shops" Woman's Haori Jacket - $125

Absolutely brilliant work on this yuzen-style stenciled fabric which combines color and an intricately cut stenciled design to create an amazing focus piece. Almost better for display since there is so much to look at -- the shop fronts, roof geometrics, great detail on the leaves, windows and tiny treasures. The colors - shades of sherbert pinks and reds - and the darker accents really give depth and dimension to the design. The silk is a medium weight drapey but firm, comfy and warm.

"Shibori Fan " Woman's Haori Jacket - $60

A wonderful example of the kanoko shibori technique for which Kyoto is famous. The design is of arched fans with floral patterning inside many of the fans. Beneath the design is a mottled dye process with colors that vary between wine and mandarin. Light feel to the silk, makes a great jacket; great with jeans.

"Brickwork" Woman's Haori - $99

Wonderful vertical bands of waving lines flow up and down each panel of this elegant silk jacket. Perfect for autumn in a red-brick and white. There's a sweet patterned jacquard beneath all the work of the shibori tie-dyeing, visible only when the light hits it right. Nice lining - like all haori, it's a reversible jacket.

"Cocoa and Lime" Woman's Haori - $125
ITEM NUMBER: 0908GWH5
Unusual color combination - a deep purply brown that must have some green in it since that seems to be the color they kept from this shibori dipping process. Somehow, it works well, with the result becoming almost golden from afar. The scattered three-petaled floral is also a single chain of kanoko shibori dots and in the surrounding silk you can see the jacquard silk floral and geometric patterning. A slight discoloration at one sleeve end but otherwise excellent condition.

"Shades of Cherry " Woman's Haori - $149
ITEM NUMBER: 0908GWH12
A complicated process and many skilled hands created this delightful piece of wearable art. Note the deep contrast between the hem and sleeve edges dipped deeply and many times in a dye bath before the garment was constructed! Add in the shibori floral design and the hand-stitched sparkles (yes, rainbow metalic threads) that highlight the design. And finally, note the single crest at the neck which is created with french knot embroidery in a red metalic thread. Quite unique.

"Fuschia Floral" Woman's Haori - $115

A strong pink for a strong look - it's on the raspberry side of fuschia, but rich enough to please any pink-lover. An overall kanoko dot shibori except for the stretches of floral patterning on the left front sleeve, back right sleeve and back hem. Lots of pucker for texture, and look closely at the square shibori to note the slight irregularities that confirm it wa all hand done. Dress is up or down - works well with black.

"A Fawn's Back" Woman's Haori - $75
ITEM NUMBER: 0908GWH10
Understated overall puckered "kanoko" style shibori fabric that belies the great care and craftsmanship that went into its creation. The tiny diagonal pattern is created by hand, by tying the silk in even rows with an even, skilled hand to bind each white square but leave the center tip to be dyed with the rest. A detailed, painstaking process, associated with Kyoto craftsmen, meant to mimics a fawn's spots.

"Ukranian Eggs" Woman's Haori - $120

The design is more likely to be tamari (intricately woven balls) or vases, to us the design looks egg-shaped and decorated, so we thought of Easter. The background is a sweet steel gray blue with an overall kanoko shibori with the centers the same shade as the background. Look closely and you can see the geometric and floral jacquard woven into the silk. Light but lined - great with jeans or something fancier.

"Teal Mums" Woman's Haori - $120

A light colored and light weight (though it is lined) jacket with a pale green background and several patches of florals done many shades darker from many more dippings in the same dye bath. The tips of the puckered shibori dots are the same shade as the darker teal. The floral design seems to be many-petaled chrysanthemums done with single lines of shibori. The background is a geometric and floral jacquard.

"Sumie Brush " Woman's Haori Jacket - $95

If you're looking for art to wear, this could be it. All hand drawn in a sumie-brushwork style with a watercolor effect, these five petaled blossoms decorate a winter's branch in blacks and grays (with some surprise green!) against an ivory textured silk. There are also brushed bands of color (blue and purple) ever so subtly drawn in a grid behind the florals. Just beautiful!

"True Grid " Woman's Haori Jacket - $65

A dochiurgi style of jacket with a cross-over closure (unlike the haori style that does not cross in the front). This style ties inside at the left and outside at the right, allowing for a more generous fit if needed. The fabric is a wonderfully textured grid weave in golds and greens that reminds us of hay fields in the Fall.

"Navy Baby" Woman's Haori Jacket - $85

We don't see such a rich navy blue very often, and this one is a prize with its floral design taking full advantage of the woven silk jacquard patterning. Yes, the white-outlined blossoms are also textured as part of the fabric, with their design brought forward by a dying process (using rice paste) that allows for the color of each floral to be degrees lighter than the background. The silk itself has a lovely drape - elegant and luxurious.

What's more striking than an overall shibori design on red?! We don't get them often and they always go fast. The background silk is a lightening jacquard but the overlapping circle design is so artfully done that it draws the eye to the surface design. Still got the puckered texture, note the uneven dotting that denote hand tied shibori.

Take a good look at the overall design and see if you don't agree that the jigsaw puzzle look of the patterning actually spirals out from a center piece, creating a peony blossom look....! See the tiny squares of shibori with dark centers arranged with a flat, darkly dyed line that separates the petals. A fun jacket to look at, admire, and contemplate. Even more fun to wear.

"Delighted" Woman's Haori Jacket - $90
ITEM NUMBER: 0108WH5
A fairly vintage jacket (probably from the 1950's) but still in excellent condition - even a bit stiff from lack of use. Stored well all of these years as noted by the removable basting stitches. In the background are tiny woven diamonds and on top is a scattering of abstract florals in turquoise, coral and silver. A merry mix of color and design even in the lining that peeks out at the sleeve openings! - that gives the jacket a light-hearted feel. Sturdy for casual wear - even over jeans!
