NEW Groom's Hakama - $120 includes shipping

ITEM NUMBER: GARHAK
New (not vintage) formal striped version of the traditional pleated pants typically worn by Japanese grooms. Long ties, with deep side slits that create an "open" sizing, skirt style (which makes wearing a kimono underneath more manageable) and a plastic tab that fits into the obi in the back. Longer in the back (45") than in the front (41") to account for the obi bow in the back, the hem should fall between ankle and foot, but they can be worn at or below the waist, which can help adjust the length. (If these are not long enough for you, check out our custom made hakama)

Haori Himo (woven ties) Set of twelve pair - $20

ITEM NUMBER: 0109HimoSet
These lovely decorative ties can be found on many vintage women's haori jackets. They are created on a special loom with a macrame or braiding technique. Typcally four to seven inches long, they might be flat or rounded, soft or stiff, and often have a tassled end but sometimes something uniquely different. Modern uses include bookmarks, zipper pulls, key chains, and more! Your set will be assembled according to your preferences (given on the order form) as much as our ever-changing inventory will allow.

Linen Look Noren - $18

ITEM NUMBER: 0109Noren
Great as a sheer window covering, an airy room divider, or studio decor. Feels like linen but we are unsure of the fiber content. A light tan color with an open, semi-sheer weave. These noren are new, not vintage, so are in excellent condition. Two panels stitched together at the top with a sleeve casing for a bamboo pole or even a regular curtain rod. These noren soften up in the wash but also overdye well (get soft tones with RIT dye in the washing machine!). Two 17.5" panels make it 35" acrosss and 59" long.

"Morticia" Woman's Shawl - $60

ITEM NUMBER: 1008Misc15
Midnight black crushed velvet on one side and a black raw silk on the other. And don't miss the silk fringe on both ends.... Shawls are typically worn across the shoulders of a kimono-clad woman since a jacket is impractical over the sleeves and obi. These shawls are a wonderful wardrobe accessory, drawing attention to the neckline and shoulders. This one is a wonderful example of simple with a twist - the velvet really catches the light and adds a shimmer to your basic black evening ensemble.

"His and Hers" Souvenier Robes - $200 (for both)

ITEM NUMBER: 1008Misc18
Too unusual to pass up, this pair of quilted vintage robes were purchased back in the 1950's in Japan by a US worker there for the reconstruction efforts. The robes are a satiny silk, both in the same cobalt blue but each with different styling and detail. Hers has a ruffled collar and feminine embroidery on the front panel. His has contrasting cream colored cuffs and collar with a couched dragon embroidered on each lapel. And the twisted cord belt is the finishing touch! Both have white silk linings and two waist and one upper pockets.

They are available in both pant and skirt style - which still has slits on the side, but no pantlegs, just the skirt. (If these are not long enough for you, check out our custom made hakama)

Baby Boy Bundler (apron/blanket) - $45

ITEM NUMBER: 0404Misc1

We've only seen on of these in our ten years at the market. Boy's kimono fabric (with masculine image of drums and mythical symbols) was used to create the top layer, which leads us to belive this was a swaddling blanket for an infant boy. But the shape and ties at the top give it an apron-shape, so who knows? Inside lining is a smooth silk fabric. Thickly padded, in great condition.

Sakiori Summer Blanket - $550

ITEM NUMBER: 0506SummerSakiOri

Wonderful assembly of five rag weave pieces (former obi?) in an array of colors, tightly woven and holding up excellently given the likely age of this blanket (maybe 1950's or earlier?). The backing is a bright orange/red/black plaid cotton, which contrasts with the more natural tones of the top. Sakiori is a rag weave technique used mainly in rural Japan, and common in the pre-and post war periods when materials were scarce and nothing was wasted. The rags for this blanket would most likely have been worn out kimonos. These are hard to find and heavy to ship, but oh-so-nice to have!

Sakiori Winter Blanket - $600

ITEM NUMBER: 0506WinterSakiOri

The weight and the weave are sure to keep you warm this winter! It's a sakiori blanket made from five panels of rag weave sewn together with a green stripe down each panel. We think this weaving was created as a blanket, rather than former obi panels because of the green bands that create an intentional design. A heavy cotton padding, backing is a cotton maroon, and the layers are tacked with a single quilting stitch. An excellent addition to your collection of Japanese textiles...

Indigo Baby Futon - $250

ITEM NUMBER: 0506IndigoBlanket

Lightweight but warm, this small blanket is pieced indigo cottons on the backside (some are quite faded) and an interesting combination of patterns on the front. Similar color schemes but asymetrical placement. Padded inside with cotton batting (most likely), and tacked with a wide sashiko-style quilting stitche throughout. Small enough to display but still quite sturdy so could be used as a blanket!
