"Colorful with Cranes"

A very vintage formal, five-crested
kimono with an unsually colorful palette. We guess it is from
the Taisho Period (1920's) because of the red
lining and the craftwork -- embroidery, gold detail, painting
-- all obviously done by hand. The patterning is set in two
large semi-circles that extend high on the thigh and continue
into the inside
of the kimono - something you don't see much after 1950. Dowry carts and
a pair of cranes
confirm that this was meant to be worn at a wedding. Some fading and mottling
in places - understandable given its age - and though still quite
wearable, it
should go in a collection or on display. |

"Honeymoon Hut " Woman's
Kimono - $210

A soft, chirimen
crepe silk makes this a pleasure to wear.
It could be from the Taisho Period (1920's) as suggested by the
red lining, but
the condition is otherwise excellent and shows
no sign of aging. A sweet, earthtone scene of pine
boughs (with some embroidery)
and a hut partially
hidden hints at a mystery - the honeymoon cabin? The patterning
extends to the inside
of the kimono. This formal,
crested style was typically worn by the mothers of the bride
or groom, and while the subdued colors suggest an older woman,
the longer sleeves and red lining make us suspect... a racy maiden
aunt!? |

The feel and flow
of this creamy silk kimono is luxurious. The design seems to
be overlapping, offset
stencilled brushwork of abstract bouquets of blossoms. Purples,
pinks, blues, golds and greens, with the stems inked in black
and arching in all directions. It's a cluster
of color against a cream background, ready to pick up any
accent color you like. Request
a belt in purple, blue, black or green.....? |
